Day 99: CRUSH Birmingham | The Awesome Mitten

CRUSH MICHIGAN kicked off their 2011 fundraising season with CRUSH Northern Michigan, held at a private estate at the end of July, and will culminate with the upcoming CRUSH Birmingham on September 24th.The 2011 final fundraiser will be hosted at the Townsend Hotel, a Michigan landmark in its own right, having been honored with TRAVEL + LEISURE Magazine?s World?s Best award for several consecutive years. Not only will the Townsend be hosting the event, its celebrated restaurant, The Rugby Grille (rated one of the top ten best restaurants in the United States), will be one of the venues represented at CRUSH Birmingham. Joining Jim Bologna, the executive chef of The Rugby Grille, are chefs from restaurants all over Michigan, many from Birmingham and the surrounding area.Courtesy of CRUSH Michigan

Joining the guest culinary masters will be several wine experts who will describe, advise and recommend diverse wine choices and pairings. Among these experts are two advance sommeliers and three master sommeliers (three of only 186 master sommeliers in the world). In addition to holding this prestigious title, the Honorary Wine Director, Ron Edwards, hosts Wine Talk Radio, a Northern Michigan-based radio program that provides an entertaining guide to all things wine.

On top of delectable wine and cuisine, CRUSH Birmingham will also include an award ceremony, recognizing humanitarianism, leadership and pioneers in medicine in the state of Michigan. And as with any good event, there is, of course, an after party! The CRUSH Birmingham After-Hours will also be held at the Townsend, complete with a 14 piece band, midnight snacks, and a fully bar of R?my Cointreau luxury spirits, including a signature CRUSH cocktail.

As if the venue, wine and cuisine weren?t enough of a draw, all of the proceeds from the event go to benefit the Children?s Leukemia Foundation. This Michigan based, nonprofit charity is dedicated to providing affected families with information, money and emotional support, as well as donating millions of dollars to leukemia research. William Seklar, president and CEO of the foundation, had this to say of the event: ?[Guests] will enjoy a rare experience to get up close and personal with world-renowned wine experts and culinary masters, many of which are from award-winning Michigan restaurants like Forest Grill, Rugby Grille, Trattoria Stella and La Becasse. Extraordinary wines, incredible cuisine and a hip crowd, It?s a perfect evening for anyone who is a wine or food aficionado, and it?s all to benefit children and adults who suffer from leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin?s disease and other blood-related cancers.?

Tickets for the event can be purchase through the CRUSH MICHIGAN website, including discounted tickets for young adults, as well as tickets to CRUSH After-Hours only. ~Hayley Serr, Contributing Writer
