More than 200 genes identified for Crohn's Disease

Friday, December 14, 2012

More than two hundred gene locations have now been identified for the chronic bowel condition Crohn's Disease, in a study that analysed the entire human genome.

Published today in The American Journal of Human Genetics, scientists at UCL have devised a new method for identifying and mapping gene locations for complex inherited diseases. Using this method, they have been able to identify a large number of additional genes for Crohn's Disease, making a total of more than 200, which is more than have been found for any other disease. For example, there are just 66 known gene-regions for type 2 diabetes.

Crohn's Disease, a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, is a chronic illness of complex origins affecting approximately 100 to 150 people per 100,000. Understanding the genetic component of such complex diseases is central to explaining patients' symptoms and improving treatment.

Despite Crohn's having a large genetic component, this has been hard to dissect. This is partly due to the large number of genes involved, their complex interactions with environment and the spectrum of clinical presentations. As a result, many scientists have been focusing on ever larger cohorts of patients under the impression that larger data sets data will give better results.

This study shows how studying smaller but better defined groups can lead to a better understanding of how complex diseases are inherited, and paving the way for personalised treatment.

Dr Nikolas Maniatis, senior author from the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, said: "The discovery of so many gene locations for Crohn's Disease is an important step forward in understanding the disease, which has a very complicated genetic basis. We hope that the method we have used here can be used to identify the genes involved in other diseases which are similarly complex, for example different cancers and diabetes."

The research team used UK data provided by the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC), which includes genetic information of 1698 CD patients. The team's results were also replicated using independent US data provided by the American National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), which contains genetic information of 813 patients with CD.

Dr Maniatis said: "The discovery of so many additional genes for Crohn's and much more precise locations within the gene-regions was partly because of the highly informative genetic maps of the human genome that we have used in our approach to locating the genes involved."

He added: "The success of our work was also attributable to the fact that we were able to subdivide patients by disease presentation. Data stratification can help sort out the genetics, and before long genetics will be able to sort out patients".

The team have provided the first clear evidence that some clinical sub-groups of patients are likely to carry different risk genes and their study shows how with a sufficiently powerful method more genes can be found in small groups of patients.

Professor Dallas Swallow, a collaborator and co-author also from the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution & Environment, said: "Some genes are likely to have a large effect and some small, but not all genes will act the same way in all patients. We can combine all this information with that obtained by others from examining cellular and molecular changes to sort this out. This will ultimately lead to more personalised strategies for treatment".

Android-powered Ca-Fi Dashlinq infotainment system coming in January

CA-FI Dashlinq

We've seen Android put in a lot of devices that aren't phones or tablets -- appliances, robots, light bulbs -- and car infotainment systems seem to be a good fit for the OS. Ca-Fi is set to release a new line of "Dashlinq" car head units running Android, with all of the features you'd want or need jammed in. It's running Android 2.3 -- as you can see by the navigation buttons on the right side -- with an 800x480 6.95-inch multi-touch screen, SDcard slot, optional Wifi and 3G, a USB port, bluetooth and GPS.

This unit doesn't skimp on the car integration either. It has full steering wheel control support, dual zone support, a 9 band EQ setting, Digital Sound Processor (DSP) and full radio support. It handles both calls and audio streaming over bluetooth as well.

Ca-Fi is setting the Dashlinq pricing at $649, and it will be available in January. There's a few more images of the unit and interface at the source link below.

Marriage Equality: Gay Couples in Legalized Unions Are Happier ...

Legal recognition of relationships may improve mental health
Legalized marriage is linked to better health for both hetero- and homosexual couples.

A new study proves both same-sex couples and heterosexual couples benefit from marriage.

A study published by the American Journal of Public Health finds married gay couples have less psychological distress than non-married same-sex couples.

Researchers surveyed 47,000 hetero- and homosexual men and women about their well-being, relationship status and demographic as part of the 2009 California Health Interview Survey ? before Proposition 8. They concluded that marriage, for gay and straight participants, reduced feelings of nervousness, hopelessness and depression.

More from YourTango: Love Bytes: How To Date A Hobbit-Head

While this shouldn't be a surprise since heterosexual marriage has been linked to better mental health for some time now, it's an important study to come out now as the Supreme Court has just agreed to take up the constitutionality of same-sex marriage in the spring.

Seeing how legalizing a relationship can affect one's mental health is significant ? especially since research has shown that members of the LGBT community experience higher distress levels than heterosexuals due to social exclusion.

University of California, Los Angeles, public health researcher Richard Wight, who led the study, initially expected different results given the discrimination gay couples face.?"I think it's reasonable to think that legally blocking people from marriage can put their mental health at risk," he told LiveScience.

More from YourTango: Here's Something to Smile About: DC's Chalkboard Mural

Could this be what the Supreme Court and same-sex marriage opponents need to hear? Along with other victories in marriage equality this year, this feels like a step in the right direction.

What do you think? Do you agree that legalizing a relationship can boost mental health?

Maggie Lyon : Making Room for Spiritual Practice

What is spiritual practice? Furthermore, do you have one?

Simply put, I define spiritual practice as something you do every single day that draws you deeper into who you really are, by connecting you with your divine self.

Please don't be put off by the word "spiritual" here! "Spiritual" doesn't have to entail -- though it often does -- meditation cushions, prayer beads, chant books, yoga mats, or any other such paraphernalia. A spiritual practice might be baking, gardening, running, knitting, playing piano, painting, hiking, meditating, golfing, doing yoga, tai chi, or calligraphy. It is not so much about the form but about the profound and connective quality of the time spent within it.

The practice part means just that: You do it daily, over and over, not in a gross way, but rather in a this-is-what-makes-me-who-I-am way. Without the aim of ever stopping with it, you practice as contribution to your ever-unfolding life on this earth. It can feel beautiful and compelling, harrowing and agonizing, annoying, vexing, boring as hell, or as ordinary and routine as brushing your teeth. Above all it is your rock, the ultimate placating pillar, steady and reliable as they come.

There have been times when, driven by such desperation, my yoga, pranayama, meditation, and journaling practices served as literal life preservers, day by grueling day. In these pockets, practice translates directly as necessity. In the coasting phases of our lives, however, or during the highly celebratory ones, spiritual practice feels as joyous as the spread of a bright authentic smile, or as easy to fall into as a hammock under the stars, in the perfect climate and between the two most exquisite trees.

This is all great, you say, but how do I actually do it? First you have to admit that practice is essential, and something you must do. Next, you must designate, carve out, and stick to the time for it, often letting go of something else in order to keep it alive. Many people find it easiest to maintain practice first thing in the morning. But what does that mean you give up? Sleep? Or is it the extra hour on the computer before bed the night before so that you don't lose the time in bed? There are choices here. It is up to you.

In short, and for you to take as inspiration or affirmation, here are my top 10 benefits of spiritual practice:

  1. It provides clarity in the midst of our overflowing and demanding days.

  2. It cultivates the attention required to complete our tasks.

  3. It lifts our mood.

  4. It creates a sense of steadiness and grounding in change.

  5. It keeps us afloat and even-keeled in even the most riotous emotional storms.

  6. It helps us see our lives on a macro level.

  7. It helps us understand our lives on a micro level.

  8. It draws us into the simplicity of the moment.

  9. It touches us so deeply that without it we would feel lost or downright not right.

  10. It connects us to and reveals true spirit.

Ultimately, we must summon the courage to make room for spiritual practice, and the experiment that it is, as instigator at any given time of peace, elation, chill out, "aha," tears, or evocative reflection. We must be willing to face whatever arises within this uncanny vehicle and to touch the sacred in ourselves every precious day.

How do you feel about that?

In sweet practice,

ML

Getting graduate hires right | Dynamic Business ? Small Business ...

There are many benefits for a company to add a recent graduate to your team. Graduates come with a range of positive attributes- they generally have energy, enthusiasm, new ideas, a recent history of learning, and a level of comfort with technology.

Your newest graduates can be your next senior managers, and by acquiring that potential talent early you can create long-term employee assets.?Once the hiring part is done, the next challenge is getting the most out of a graduate. Both of these processes need to be done well from the beginning. There are a few ways to hire the right graduate for your company and keep them engaged.

Make Your Opportunity Stand Out

This should be standard in any recruitment process, but is just as important for graduates looking for their first job. Many of the standout graduates have done their research well in advance and usually have a range of options available to them. It is up to you to let them know what your organisation offers to assist them in hitting their long term career goals. Remember to sell the softer aspects of the company, why your company is a great one to work for, benefits, perks, culture and anything else that will help convince prospective employees your company can provide more than a just a job.

Examples of Career progression

If you have an internal promotions policy make the most of it. A motivated graduate will be looking out for career progression and if you can demonstrate opportunities to advance in your organisation it will be that much more attractive. Mentoring programs and advancement opportunities are important to highlight early in the process, as gaining valuable job experience is a priority for these new members of the workforce.

Career development within the organisation is a powerful. When you demonstrate an investment in their professional development, they feel valued at the company. Give examples of long term employees that started with the company and the timeline of their career path. If you are hiring several graduates at one time and holding group assessments, why not ask one of these employees to speak of their experiences of progression offered within your business, or have an employee that just finished their first year discuss how the company has met their expectations and why they chose your company over others.

Use an internship program

Internships are often under utilised and under appreciated. They are more than getting someone in the door to fill a support role, but also an effective way to scout for new employees, test fit in an organisation and access top talent early. If there?s a mutual fit with your organisation, it?s an easy transition to a permanent hire.

What to look for outside of work experience on a graduate resume

Many graduates enter the workforce with very little work experience, making it hard to ascertain how they will transition into the workplace. Instead, look for examples of achievements when have they gone above and beyond. How did they stand out from the group and push themselves? How have they shown their level of commitment, passion, potential, knowledge of the industry and motivation? The majority of the time these questions will give you a good insight to what an individual will be like as an employee.

Engage them from day one?

First impressions continue into the first few weeks for an employee, particularly for members of the younger generation who make a decision about whether or not to stay with a company long-term during their first days on the job.

Reinforce that they made the right decision to work for you by getting them contributing in a meaningful way. Every position has its share of mundane tasks, especially at entry level, but think of an important project that they could be involved in even in a small way, and point out the importance of their part of it. It will make them feel valued and part of the bigger picture, while inspiring productivity and loyalty towards your company.

Hello!

I recently took a look at my computer's Internet history and was surprised to see a website called "Hot or Not" pop up numerous times at very late (early) times (1:00 am- 3:00 am). After clicking on the link I was directed to a profile page featuring my husband! It had several photo's of him and in the tag line it read "wants to meet women between the ages of 21 and 40 near _______ (where we live)" and in the interest sections it had "sex in the city" and "sex on the beach." After poking around the page a bit I learned that it had a chat where my husband had attempted to contact several women, only one had replied and only pleasantries had been exchanged. This was about a week ago. I did not say anything to him and did not change anything on the page. Today I checked the history again and found more of the same from last night, only now he has rated over 90 women in our area! Additionally, he has added Yahoo Messenger to our computer and his only contact (still pending) is a woman I don't know, who in her photo is obviously trying to be alluring.

I'm really at a loss as to what to do here. We have been married for less than two years and dated three years prior to getting married. I have never thought that he has cheated on me. However, when we first dated there was an issue with him having inappropriate conversations with girls on facebook. Basically, I feel as though this is a dangerous route that could lead to cheating and even if it did not, I am uncomfortable with the idea of him having online "relationships" with real women. Thoughts?

Wheaton | Bekins Keeps Customers Moving with Business - VoIP Wire

INDIANAPOLIS?(BUSINESS WIRE)?Wheaton World Wide Moving | Bekins Van Lines has reported improved
customer service, increased productivity, and reduced costs as a result
of deploying Interactive Intelligence Group Inc.?s (Nasdaq: ININ) Customer
Interaction Center
? (CIC).

?After evaluating systems
from Avaya, Mitel, ShoreTel, and Tribox, we selected CIC based on its
sophisticated and flexible feature-set.?

CIC, an all-in-one IP communications software suite, replaced a Nortel
system, which was several revisions behind, according to Jerrod Carter,
CIO for Wheaton | Bekins.

?It was going to cost us $ 100,000 just to bring our Nortel system up to
date and with no added benefit,? Carter said. ?After evaluating systems
from Avaya, Mitel, ShoreTel, and Tribox, we selected CIC based on its
sophisticated and flexible feature-set.?

After making its selection, Wheaton acquired Bekins Van Lines, which was
also using CIC. As a result, it created a more aggressive deployment
timeline to facilitate communication between the two entities and
prevent any disruption of service to customers.

?Our combined entity meant we were communicating with hundreds of
independent agents across the country and thousands of service
providers,? Carter said. ?CIC enabled us to create a four-digit speed
dial to provide quick access to each agent or provider. This may seem
like a small thing, but it enabled our staff to acclimate to the
acquisition more quickly and our corporate employees to be more
efficient.?

The company was also handling a lot of military business, and operators
would spend much of their day getting frequently transferred military
personnel in touch with someone who knew the status of their move.

?By adding CIC?s skills-based call routing we were able to immediately
get our military customers to the person most familiar with their move,?
Carter said. ?This has saved our operators countless hours and has
further improved service.?

Also contributing to customer service has been CIC?s callback feature.
?Callback has equipped our agents with the information they need to more
effectively serve customers as soon as the call is connected,? Carter
said. ?It lets customers keep their place in queue without sitting on
hold ? an option they?ve come to greatly appreciate.?

The move to voice over IP has also saved the company money by enabling
it to drop its primary rate interface lines, while CIC?s desktop
softphone resulted in additional savings by eliminating the need to
purchase pricey, button-laden phones, according to Carter.

Wheaton | Bekins worked extensively with Interactive Intelligence
reseller, Communications Products Inc. (CPI), to assist with CIC?s
evaluation and deployment.

?CPI was indispensable throughout the entire process ? from its
understanding of our objectives, to how we could best meet our goals
within an aggressive timeline,? Carter said. ?The company gave us a
clear plan, and the onsite training they did for our employees the week
before going live proved critical to a smooth transition.?

Wheaton | Bekins sums up its deployment experience like this: ?During
the evaluation process, Interactive Intelligence and CPI were by far the
most impressive vendors,? Carter said. ?Since then, we?ve not been
disappointed. CIC?s been so easy to use and it?s given us all the
functionality we needed and then some.?

There's so much data that we're running out of words to describe it

10 hrs.

The world is producing and storing data at such a rate that the day isn't far off when we will literally no longer have a proper way of describing it. From mega to giga to tera to peta, the prefixes we use to describe piles of bytes are starting to run out.

It seems like every year we end up having to change the go-to word meaning "lots of data." It wasn't long ago that a gigabyte was an enormous amount of space to have on your computer, and terabytes were strictly for scientists and companies like IBM.

Nowadays, a terabyte (or several) is standard?for personal use, and petabytes are what we talk about when we have to make a point about how much data is stored by Facebook and Google. And soon those terms won't seem so big, either, as we move on to exabytes.

The problem is?that after exabytes, we have zettabytes, and then yottabytes, and then ? nothing. Zetta and yotta (and their submultiple counterparts, zepto and yocto) are the most extreme numerical prefixes we have. They were made official?in 1991 at the 19th General Conference of Weights and Measures. Evidently?they didn't foresee the need to describe anything with a greater multiple than yotta, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Indeed, yotta-anything sounds like it should be enough. The diameter of the observable universe would be approximately just 880 yottameters, points out Jessica Leber at MIT's Technology Review ? meaning if there were a bigger prefix?than yotta, the entire universe would fit inside one of them.

But the International Bureau of Weights and Measures neglected to consider the needs created by the?exponential increase in data storage. Individual hard drives hold terabytes; a rack of servers might have a few hundred drives, and a data?center could have hundreds or thousands of racks.

We're already well into petabyte territory ? in fact,?Facebook claimed to store around 100 petabytes earlier this year. Add in all the datacenters belonging to Google, Flickr, Apple, and everything else, and exabytes are very much in play.

And that's just the data we've stored; We also have to consider the enormous amount of data being transferred every day on YouTube, Netflix, DropBox, and others involved with "Big Data."

Admittedly, you can always resort to one of the many actual numbers that stretch far beyond the prefix scale: A yottabyte is a septillion bytes, so if you want more, just say octillion, or nonillion, or quattuordecillion. These "dictionary numbers" can be created endlessly by combining Latin prefixes. But giga,?tera, and whatever comes after yotta have to be decided on by the Bureau.

What are they likely to choose, should they convene for a 20th General Conference?

The prefixes so far have been linguistically-neutral (i.e. able to be pronounced by speakers of many languages) variants on Greek and Latin prefixes denoting various sizes and?numbers. Peta, for instance, which indicates 10^15 or?five sets of three zeroes, comes from the Greek word for five:??????, or pente. Zetta and yotta were based loosely?on the Latin "septem" and "octem" respectively.

Speculators on the web suggest the next prefix will be "xenna," after the Greek "ennea" for nine, though they could also go with "nonna," "enna," or any other variation suggestive of the Greek or Latin. After that, even the speculators aren't really sure.

The problem is real, but not exactly pressing. Scientists and data specialists will make do with temporary or arbitrary terms (UC Davis students suggested "hellabytes") until the Bureau meets. And, of course, just because we don't have a word for these amounts doesn't mean we can't reach them.

Russia, Azerbaijan fail to agree on use of radar station

BAKU (Reuters) - Russia and Azerbaijan failed on Monday after protracted talks to agree on Moscow's continued use of an Azeri radar station, weakening the former Soviet master's grip on the strategically important and oil-rich country.

The Azeri Foreign Ministry said its Russian counterpart had sent a note saying it would no longer use the station.

Baku had wanted to increase the annual rent for the facility to $150 million from $7 million under the current agreement. Some media outlets said Baku had raised the price to $300 million.

The two sides negotiated for more than a year over Russia's desire to continue to rent the Gabala radar station, which was built during Soviet times. The lease expires this month.

"The sides did not reach an agreement on the rent, and the Russian Federation sent a note on December 9 (saying) that it would suspend use of the radar station on December 10," the Azeri Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Azerbaijan said the higher rent was fair given the installation's importance.

But an Azeri official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said earlier this year that Baku wanted to limit Russia's presence on Azeri soil and that the price was being increased to discourage Moscow's from pursuing an extension of the rent.

Russia uses the radar station to monitor the Indian Ocean, where it carries out anti-piracy operations. The agreement was signed in 2002 and was valid until December 9 of this year.

Russia's Foreign Ministry was unavailable for immediate comment.

Moscow has seen its influence fade in Azerbaijan, which is nestled between Russia and Iran on the western coast of the Caspian Sea, as Baku has strengthened its ties with the West.

The dispute is a sign of how relations have soured between Moscow and its former Soviet vassal over the independent course it has taken, Azeri political analysts said.

"Russia understands that it is losing its sphere of influence in Azerbaijan. This steps confirms the irreversibility of this process," Zardusht Alizade said.

The loss of the Gabala station could be compensated for by a new radar station soon due to be completed in Armavir in Russia's south, Lieutenant General Nikolai Rodionov, the former commander of the country's ballistic missile early warning system, told Interfax-AVN.

Azerbaijan is a critical transportation transit point for NATO troops in Afghanistan. The United States has also helped Baku fortify its offshore oil installations.

Monkey business: What howler monkeys can tell us about the role of interbreeding in human evolution

Monkey business: What howler monkeys can tell us about the role of interbreeding in human evolution

Monday, December 10, 2012

Did different species of early humans interbreed and produce offspring of mixed ancestry?

Recent genetic studies suggest that Neanderthals may have bred with anatomically modern humans tens of thousands of years ago in the Middle East, contributing to the modern human gene pool. But the findings are not universally accepted, and the fossil record has not helped to clarify the role of interbreeding, which is also known as hybridization.

Now a University of Michigan-led study of interbreeding between two species of modern-day howler monkeys in Mexico is shedding light on why it's so difficult to confirm instances of hybridization among primates?including early humans?by relying on fossil remains.

The study, published online Dec. 7 in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, is based on analyses of genetic and morphological data collected from live-captured monkeys over the past decade. Morphology is the branch of biology that deals with the form and structure of animals and plants.

The two primate species in the study, mantled howler monkeys and black howler monkeys, diverged about 3 million years ago and differ in many respects, including behavior, appearance and the number of chromosomes they possess. Each occupies a unique geographical distribution except for the state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico, where they coexist and interbreed in what's known as a hybrid zone.

The researchers found that individuals of mixed ancestry who share most of their genome with one of the two species are physically indistinguishable from the pure individuals of that species.

"The implications of these results are that physical features are not always reliable for identifying individuals of hybrid ancestry. Therefore, it is possible that hybridization has been underestimated in the human fossil record," said Liliana Cort?s-Ortiz, an evolutionary biologist and primatologist and an assistant research scientist at the U-M Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Museum of Zoology.

First author of the paper is Mary Kelaita, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at San Antonio's Department of Anthropology. The howler monkey study was part of Kelaita's doctoral dissertation work at U-M's Department of Anthropology.

For years, anthropologists have attempted to infer hybridization among human ancestral species based on the fossil record, which represents only a snapshot in prehistory, and have concluded that hybridization is extremely rare, according to Kelaita and Cort?s-Ortiz. Given the utility of living primate models for understanding human evolution, the howler monkey study "suggests that the lack of strong evidence for hybridization in the fossil record does not negate the role it could have played in shaping early human lineage diversity," Kelaita said.

The authors conclude that the process of hybridization (defined as the production of offspring through the interbreeding between individuals of genetically distinct populations), the factors governing the expression of morphology in hybrid individuals, and the extent of reproductive isolation between species should be given further consideration in future research projects.

In their study, Kelaita and Cort?s-Ortiz analyzed different types of genetic markers, from both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, to trace the ancestry of each howler monkey they studied. The use of molecular markers made it possible to approximate the relative genetic contributions of the parental species to each hybrid.

A total of 128 hybrid individuals were detected. Kelaita and Cort?s-Ortiz found that most were likely the product of several generations of hybridization or of mating between hybrids and pure individuals.

Subsequently, they performed statistical analyses on body measurements and found a large amount of morphological variation in individuals of mixed ancestry. However, when individuals were classified according to the amount of their genome they shared with each parental species, it became clear that individuals of mixed ancestry that shared most of their genome with one of the species were physically indistinguishable from the pure individuals of that species. Even individuals that were more "intermediate" in their genetic composition were not completely intermediate in their appearance.

The study is the first to assess genetic ancestry of primate hybrids inhabiting a natural hybrid zone using molecular data to explain morphological variation.

Between 1998 and 2008, the researchers sampled 135 adult howler monkeys from Tabasco, Mexico, along with 76 others from Veracruz, Campeche, Chiapas and Quintana Roo states in Mexico and Peten in Guatemala. The field team collected blood, hair and morphometric measurements from the anesthetized animals before releasing them in the same locations. Sample collection from wild monkeys was carried out in accordance with U-M's University Committee on Use and Care of Animals protocol #09319, and in collaboration with researchers at the Universidad Veracruzana in Mexico.

The animals were weighed, and 16 body-part measurements were made: trunk, tail, leg, foot, arm and hand length; chest and abdominal girth; head circumference and breadth; head, mandible and ear length; interorbital breadth; internasal distance; and testicular volume.

Howler monkeys are among the largest of New World monkeys, with male mantled howlers weighing up to 22 pounds. Fourteen species of howler monkeys are currently recognized. They are native to Central and South American forests, in addition to southeastern Mexico.

Obama, Boehner meet to discuss 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met Sunday at the White House to discuss the ongoing negotiations over the impending "fiscal cliff," the first meeting between just the two leaders since Election Day.

Spokesmen for both Obama and Boehner said they agreed to not release details of the conversation, but emphasized that the lines of communication remain open.

The meeting comes as the White House and Congress try to break an impasse over finding a way to stop a combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in at the beginning of next year.

Obama met in November with Boehner, as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The president spoke separately by telephone with Reid and Pelosi on Friday.

Obama has been pushing higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans as one way to reduce the deficit ? a position Boehner and other House Republicans have been steadfastly against. Republicans are demanding steeper cuts in costly government entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.

One GOP senator said Sunday that Senate Republicans would probably agree to higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans if it meant getting a chance to overhaul entitlement programs.

The comments by Bob Corker of Tennessee ? a fiscal conservative who has been gaining stature in the Senate as a pragmatic deal broker ? puts new pressure on Boehner and other Republican leaders to rethink their long-held assertion that even the very rich shouldn't see their rates go up next year. GOP leaders have argued that the revenue gained by hiking the top two tax rates would be trivial to the deficit, and that any tax hike hurts job creation.

But Corker said insisting on that red line ? especially since Obama won re-election after campaigning on raising tax rates on the wealthy ? might not be wise.

"There is a growing group of folks looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end," Corker told "Fox News Sunday."

If Republicans agree to Obama's plan to increase rates on the top 2 percent of Americans, Corker added, "the focus then shifts to entitlements and maybe it puts us in a place where we actually can do something that really saves the nation."

Besides getting tax hikes through the Republican-dominated House, Corker's proposal faces another hurdle: Democrats haven't been receptive to GOP proposals on the entitlement programs. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on Sunday was skeptical about proposals to increase the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67. He said he doesn't see Congress addressing the complicated issue of Medicare overhaul in the three weeks remaining before the end of the year.

"I just don't think we can do it in a matter of days here before the end of the year," Durbin said. "We need to address that in a thoughtful way through the committee structure after the first of the year."

And hard-line fiscal conservatives in the House are holding fast to their position.

"No Republican wants to vote for a rate tax increase," said Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, chairman of the House Republican Conference.

Added Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.: "I'm not sure there is support for the rate hikes. There is support for revenue by cleaning up the code."

Still, at least one House Republican has said there is another way. Rep. Tom Cole, of Oklahoma, has said Obama and Boehner should agree not to raise tax rates on the majority of Americans and negotiate the rates for top earners later. Cole said Sunday that most House Republicans would vote for that approach because it doesn't include a rate hike.

"You know, it's not waving a white flag to recognize political reality," Cole said.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., already has said he could support higher tax rates on upper incomes as part of a comprehensive plan to cut the federal deficit.

When asked Sunday what it would take to sign on to a tax rate increase, Coburn echoed Corker's comments by responding, "Significant entitlement reform." He quickly added, however, that he has estimated that such a tax rate increase would only affect about 7 percent of the deficit.

"Will I accept a tax increase as a part of a deal to actually solve our problems? Yes," Coburn said. "But the president's negotiating with the wrong people. He needs to be negotiating with our bondholders in China, because if we don't put a credible plan on the discussion, ultimately, we all lose."

Obama's plan would raise $1.6 trillion in revenue over 10 years, partly by letting decade-old tax cuts on the country's highest earners expire at the end of the year. He would continue those Bush-era tax cuts for everyone except individuals earning more than $200,000 and couples making above $250,000. The highest rates on top-paid Americans would rise from 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent.

Boehner has offered $800 billion in new revenues to be raised by reducing or eliminating unspecified tax breaks on upper-income people. The Republican plan would cut spending by $1.4 trillion, including by trimming annual increases in Social Security payments and raising the eligibility age for Medicare.

Hensarling and Coburn spoke on ABC's "This Week." Blackburn and Cole spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Durbin spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

British TV astronomer Patrick Moore dies

LONDON | Sun Dec 9, 2012 10:58am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - British astronomer Patrick Moore, who helped map the moon and inspired generations of star gazers with decades of television broadcasts, died on Sunday aged 89.

Moore presented BBC television's landmark "The Sky at Night" program for more than 50 years, making him the longest-running presenter of a single show in broadcasting history.

His old-fashioned appearance and rapid-fire delivery endeared him to television viewers and captured the imagination of future astronomers who paid tribute to the presenter and prolific author.

"Patrick would just sit in front of the camera for a whole episode ... and just tell you about a constellation, about the stars, their names, their history," British astronomer David Whitehouse told Sky News.

"It was captivating and the best example of communication and an expert sharing his enthusiasm that I have ever experienced."

A space enthusiast from his early childhood, Moore's television career coincided with the start of the space race between Russia and the United States.

"He was broadcasting before we actually went into space and he saw a change in our understanding of the universe," British space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock told the BBC.

Moore, rarely seen without his trademark monocle, was also an enthusiastic musician and xylophone player and once accompanied a violin-playing Albert Einstein on the piano.

He never studied for a degree, building up his expertise through his own, single-minded enthusiasm, constructing an observatory in the garden of his southern England home.

His television show marked many astronomical landmarks, and he was broadcasting live when the first picture of the far side of the moon were returned by a Russian satellite.

Television schedulers were not always sympathetic to the significance of developments in space.

During the NASA Apollo 8 mission, Moore told viewers they were about to hear the voices of first men round the Moon in "one of the greatest moments in human history," only to be interrupted by BBC switching the broadcast to a daily children's show.

South Africa: Nelson Mandela hospitalized

JOHANNESBURG -- South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela was admitted to a military hospital Saturday for medical tests, though the nation's president told the public there was "no cause for alarm" over the 94-year-old icon's health.

The statement issued by President Jacob Zuma's spokesman said that Mandela was doing well and was receiving medical care "which is consistent for his age." The statement offered no other details.

Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, became South Africa's first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term. He later retired from public life to live in his village of Qunu, and last made a public appearance when his country hosted the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament.

"We wish Madiba all the best," Zuma said in a statement, using Mandela's clan name. "The medical team is assured of our support as they look after and ensure the comfort of our beloved founding president of a free and democratic South Africa."

In February, Mandela spent a night in a hospital for a minor diagnostic surgery to determine the cause of an abdominal complaint. He was hospitalized in January 2011 with a respiratory infection.

While

Zuma's statement offered no further details about who would provide medical attention for Mandela, the nation's military largely has taken over caring for the aging leader.

Mac Maharaj, a presidential spokesman, declined to say whether Mandela had been flown by the military to Pretoria. He also declined to say what the tests were for.

"It's quite normal at his age to be going through those tests," Maharaj told The Associated Press.

Mandela's hospitalization comes just days after the crash of a military aircraft flying on an unknown mission near Mandela's rural home in which all 11 onboard were killed. The plane was flying to a military air base in Mthatha, which is about 30 kilometers (17 miles) north of Qunu. Military officials declined to say whether those on board had any part in caring for Mandela.

New Trade Pact Can Bring Holiday Cheer and Jobs to America

This week in Auckland, New Zealand, countries negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) received a little early holiday cheer as Canada and Mexico entered into their first full round of negotiations ? the 15th round of talks for the initiating parties.

With the addition of Canada and Mexico, the world?s 11th and 14th largest economies respectively, roughly 30% of world GDP will be encompassed in the TPP?s new high standard rules governing trade and investment.

As the U.S. Chamber testified before the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative regarding Canada and Mexico, the inclusion of these two allies into the negotiation process is sound economic strategy for the United States: Canada and Mexico are the two largest markets in the world for U.S. exports, purchasing nearly one-third of U.S. goods ($479 billion in 2011) and supporting 14 million U.S. jobs.? For these North American partners, TPP represents a critical opportunity to modernize an already strong economic relationship, ?and deepen the trilateral integration that makes each country more competitive in the global arena.? As noted in the U.S. Chamber?s recent report NAFTA Triumphant, U.S., Canadian, and Mexican supply chains and production processes are deeply integrated ensuring that both countries provide export platforms for U.S. products, with a high proportion of U.S. content in exports from both countries.

That means when Canada and Mexico export goods, U.S. workers win.

This holiday season, we?re asking Santa for some good news on a successful conclusion to the negotiations in 2013.? The U.S. Chamber?s Catherine Mellor thinks we?re holding on the ?nice? list, hoping for a 2013 TPP announcement.? If so, 2013 will be a great New Year for U.S. global competitiveness and also for the global rules-based trading system.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) ? More than 2,000 people are gathering at Pearl Harbor on Friday to mark the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack that killed thousands of people and launched the United States into World War II.

Ceremonies get under way with a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the exact time the bombing began in 1941.

The crew of a Navy guided-missile destroyer will stand on deck while the ship passes the USS Arizona, a battleship that still lies in the harbor where it sank decades ago.

Hawaii Air National Guard aircraft will fly overhead in missing man formation.

The Navy and National Park Service are hosting the ceremonies, which are being held in remembrance of the 2,390 service members and 49 civilians killed in the attack.

Friday events will also give special recognition to members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, who flew noncombat missions during World War II, and to ray Emory, a 91-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor who has pushed to identify the remains of unknown servicemen.

Admiral Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, is scheduled to give the keynote address at the ceremony. The ceremony will also include a Hawaiian blessing, songs played by the U.S. Pacific Fleet band and a rifle salute from the U.S. Marine Corps.

President Barack Obama marked the day on Thursday by issuing a presidential proclamation, calling for flags to fly at half-staff on Friday and asking all Americans to observe the day of remembrance and honor military service members and veterans.

"Today, we pay solemn tribute to America's sons and daughters who made the ultimate sacrifice at Oahu," Obama said in a statement. "As we do, let us also reaffirm that their legacy will always burn bright ? whether in the memory of those who knew them, the spirit of service that guides our men and women in uniform today, or the heart of the country they kept strong and free."

The Navy and park service will resume taking visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial, which sits atop the sunken battleship, after the ceremony.

Nigeria central bank says tightening achieved aims

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's central bank governor said on Wednesday that monetary tightening earlier in the year had largely achieved its objectives of stabilising the naira and taming inflation, which were less of a worry than four months ago.

Lamido Sanusi, who spoke to Reuters on the sidelines of the Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja, also reiterated his concern that oil prices could fall due to global economic uncertainty, posing risk for Nigeria, one of the world's 10 biggest oil exporters.

The Nigerian central bank kept interest rates on hold at 12 percent at its last Monetary Policy Committee meeting on November 20, for the seventh time in a row. Sanusi at the time cited the need to tread a fine line between concerns over food inflation and threats to Nigeria's growth from global economic weakness.

Yet his comments during the meeting were seen by analysts as unusually dovish on inflation, leading some speculate that loosening could be in the pipeline in the near future.

"It's clear the objectives we set for ourselves when we tightened have been largely achieved," Sanusi told Reuters on Wednesday. "We've stabilised the exchange rate and we've stopped inflation from spiking. Core inflation has come down for the fourth consecutive month."

Nigeria's naira currency had been under pressure earlier this year, but central bank intervention at the end of June has seen it gradually appreciate since.

Analysts expect the current 12 percent base interest rate to be maintained until at least March next year, after which it may come down a bit, if inflation continues to stabilise, they say.

"There are underlying widespread pressures on imported food inflation ... But in terms of where we were 4-5 months ago, the concerns are more muted," Sanusi said, declining to comment on whether that means rates could soon come down.

"(At the last MPC meeting) We really didn't think it was time yet to start loosening, which is not to say we will not loosen," Sanusi said.

Nigeria, Africa's second-biggest economy, grew 6.5 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, up slightly on the previous quarter but below last year's levels. Sanusi is concerned about the economic impact of an oil price shock.

"The major concerns are around the external environment: what's happening in America, what's happening in Europe and what will happen to commodity prices as a result," he said.

He added that the accumulation of foreign exchange reserves - they are currently at a more than three-year high - would help cushion Nigeria against a possible oil price shock.

But he remained concerned about the government spending too much of its oil windfall, especially with the legislature trying to inflate the benchmark oil price above the administration's proposed $75 a barrel, which would mean saving less.

Oil revenues above the benchmark are deposited into a savings account, so the higher it is, the less is saved.

"I don't think it is appropriate for the legislature to be increasing the benchmark price," he said.
