More than 200 genes identified for Crohn's Disease

Friday, December 14, 2012

More than two hundred gene locations have now been identified for the chronic bowel condition Crohn's Disease, in a study that analysed the entire human genome.

Published today in The American Journal of Human Genetics, scientists at UCL have devised a new method for identifying and mapping gene locations for complex inherited diseases. Using this method, they have been able to identify a large number of additional genes for Crohn's Disease, making a total of more than 200, which is more than have been found for any other disease. For example, there are just 66 known gene-regions for type 2 diabetes.

Crohn's Disease, a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, is a chronic illness of complex origins affecting approximately 100 to 150 people per 100,000. Understanding the genetic component of such complex diseases is central to explaining patients' symptoms and improving treatment.

Despite Crohn's having a large genetic component, this has been hard to dissect. This is partly due to the large number of genes involved, their complex interactions with environment and the spectrum of clinical presentations. As a result, many scientists have been focusing on ever larger cohorts of patients under the impression that larger data sets data will give better results.

This study shows how studying smaller but better defined groups can lead to a better understanding of how complex diseases are inherited, and paving the way for personalised treatment.

Dr Nikolas Maniatis, senior author from the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, said: "The discovery of so many gene locations for Crohn's Disease is an important step forward in understanding the disease, which has a very complicated genetic basis. We hope that the method we have used here can be used to identify the genes involved in other diseases which are similarly complex, for example different cancers and diabetes."

The research team used UK data provided by the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC), which includes genetic information of 1698 CD patients. The team's results were also replicated using independent US data provided by the American National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), which contains genetic information of 813 patients with CD.

Dr Maniatis said: "The discovery of so many additional genes for Crohn's and much more precise locations within the gene-regions was partly because of the highly informative genetic maps of the human genome that we have used in our approach to locating the genes involved."

He added: "The success of our work was also attributable to the fact that we were able to subdivide patients by disease presentation. Data stratification can help sort out the genetics, and before long genetics will be able to sort out patients".

The team have provided the first clear evidence that some clinical sub-groups of patients are likely to carry different risk genes and their study shows how with a sufficiently powerful method more genes can be found in small groups of patients.

Professor Dallas Swallow, a collaborator and co-author also from the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution & Environment, said: "Some genes are likely to have a large effect and some small, but not all genes will act the same way in all patients. We can combine all this information with that obtained by others from examining cellular and molecular changes to sort this out. This will ultimately lead to more personalised strategies for treatment".

Android-powered Ca-Fi Dashlinq infotainment system coming in January

CA-FI Dashlinq

We've seen Android put in a lot of devices that aren't phones or tablets -- appliances, robots, light bulbs -- and car infotainment systems seem to be a good fit for the OS. Ca-Fi is set to release a new line of "Dashlinq" car head units running Android, with all of the features you'd want or need jammed in. It's running Android 2.3 -- as you can see by the navigation buttons on the right side -- with an 800x480 6.95-inch multi-touch screen, SDcard slot, optional Wifi and 3G, a USB port, bluetooth and GPS.

This unit doesn't skimp on the car integration either. It has full steering wheel control support, dual zone support, a 9 band EQ setting, Digital Sound Processor (DSP) and full radio support. It handles both calls and audio streaming over bluetooth as well.

Ca-Fi is setting the Dashlinq pricing at $649, and it will be available in January. There's a few more images of the unit and interface at the source link below.

Marriage Equality: Gay Couples in Legalized Unions Are Happier ...

Legal recognition of relationships may improve mental health
Legalized marriage is linked to better health for both hetero- and homosexual couples.

A new study proves both same-sex couples and heterosexual couples benefit from marriage.

A study published by the American Journal of Public Health finds married gay couples have less psychological distress than non-married same-sex couples.

Researchers surveyed 47,000 hetero- and homosexual men and women about their well-being, relationship status and demographic as part of the 2009 California Health Interview Survey ? before Proposition 8. They concluded that marriage, for gay and straight participants, reduced feelings of nervousness, hopelessness and depression.

More from YourTango: Love Bytes: How To Date A Hobbit-Head

While this shouldn't be a surprise since heterosexual marriage has been linked to better mental health for some time now, it's an important study to come out now as the Supreme Court has just agreed to take up the constitutionality of same-sex marriage in the spring.

Seeing how legalizing a relationship can affect one's mental health is significant ? especially since research has shown that members of the LGBT community experience higher distress levels than heterosexuals due to social exclusion.

University of California, Los Angeles, public health researcher Richard Wight, who led the study, initially expected different results given the discrimination gay couples face.?"I think it's reasonable to think that legally blocking people from marriage can put their mental health at risk," he told LiveScience.

Could this be what the Supreme Court and same-sex marriage opponents need to hear? Along with other victories in marriage equality this year, this feels like a step in the right direction.

What do you think? Do you agree that legalizing a relationship can boost mental health?

Maggie Lyon : Making Room for Spiritual Practice

What is spiritual practice? Furthermore, do you have one?

Simply put, I define spiritual practice as something you do every single day that draws you deeper into who you really are, by connecting you with your divine self.

Please don't be put off by the word "spiritual" here! "Spiritual" doesn't have to entail -- though it often does -- meditation cushions, prayer beads, chant books, yoga mats, or any other such paraphernalia. A spiritual practice might be baking, gardening, running, knitting, playing piano, painting, hiking, meditating, golfing, doing yoga, tai chi, or calligraphy. It is not so much about the form but about the profound and connective quality of the time spent within it.

The practice part means just that: You do it daily, over and over, not in a gross way, but rather in a this-is-what-makes-me-who-I-am way. Without the aim of ever stopping with it, you practice as contribution to your ever-unfolding life on this earth. It can feel beautiful and compelling, harrowing and agonizing, annoying, vexing, boring as hell, or as ordinary and routine as brushing your teeth. Above all it is your rock, the ultimate placating pillar, steady and reliable as they come.

There have been times when, driven by such desperation, my yoga, pranayama, meditation, and journaling practices served as literal life preservers, day by grueling day. In these pockets, practice translates directly as necessity. In the coasting phases of our lives, however, or during the highly celebratory ones, spiritual practice feels as joyous as the spread of a bright authentic smile, or as easy to fall into as a hammock under the stars, in the perfect climate and between the two most exquisite trees.

This is all great, you say, but how do I actually do it? First you have to admit that practice is essential, and something you must do. Next, you must designate, carve out, and stick to the time for it, often letting go of something else in order to keep it alive. Many people find it easiest to maintain practice first thing in the morning. But what does that mean you give up? Sleep? Or is it the extra hour on the computer before bed the night before so that you don't lose the time in bed? There are choices here. It is up to you.

In short, and for you to take as inspiration or affirmation, here are my top 10 benefits of spiritual practice:

  1. It provides clarity in the midst of our overflowing and demanding days.

  2. It cultivates the attention required to complete our tasks.

  3. It lifts our mood.

  4. It creates a sense of steadiness and grounding in change.

  5. It keeps us afloat and even-keeled in even the most riotous emotional storms.

  6. It helps us see our lives on a macro level.

  7. It helps us understand our lives on a micro level.

  8. It draws us into the simplicity of the moment.

  9. It touches us so deeply that without it we would feel lost or downright not right.

  10. It connects us to and reveals true spirit.

Ultimately, we must summon the courage to make room for spiritual practice, and the experiment that it is, as instigator at any given time of peace, elation, chill out, "aha," tears, or evocative reflection. We must be willing to face whatever arises within this uncanny vehicle and to touch the sacred in ourselves every precious day.

How do you feel about that?

In sweet practice,

ML

Getting graduate hires right | Dynamic Business ? Small Business ...

There are many benefits for a company to add a recent graduate to your team. Graduates come with a range of positive attributes- they generally have energy, enthusiasm, new ideas, a recent history of learning, and a level of comfort with technology.

Your newest graduates can be your next senior managers, and by acquiring that potential talent early you can create long-term employee assets.?Once the hiring part is done, the next challenge is getting the most out of a graduate. Both of these processes need to be done well from the beginning. There are a few ways to hire the right graduate for your company and keep them engaged.

Make Your Opportunity Stand Out

This should be standard in any recruitment process, but is just as important for graduates looking for their first job. Many of the standout graduates have done their research well in advance and usually have a range of options available to them. It is up to you to let them know what your organisation offers to assist them in hitting their long term career goals. Remember to sell the softer aspects of the company, why your company is a great one to work for, benefits, perks, culture and anything else that will help convince prospective employees your company can provide more than a just a job.

Examples of Career progression

If you have an internal promotions policy make the most of it. A motivated graduate will be looking out for career progression and if you can demonstrate opportunities to advance in your organisation it will be that much more attractive. Mentoring programs and advancement opportunities are important to highlight early in the process, as gaining valuable job experience is a priority for these new members of the workforce.

Career development within the organisation is a powerful. When you demonstrate an investment in their professional development, they feel valued at the company. Give examples of long term employees that started with the company and the timeline of their career path. If you are hiring several graduates at one time and holding group assessments, why not ask one of these employees to speak of their experiences of progression offered within your business, or have an employee that just finished their first year discuss how the company has met their expectations and why they chose your company over others.

Use an internship program

Internships are often under utilised and under appreciated. They are more than getting someone in the door to fill a support role, but also an effective way to scout for new employees, test fit in an organisation and access top talent early. If there?s a mutual fit with your organisation, it?s an easy transition to a permanent hire.

What to look for outside of work experience on a graduate resume

Many graduates enter the workforce with very little work experience, making it hard to ascertain how they will transition into the workplace. Instead, look for examples of achievements when have they gone above and beyond. How did they stand out from the group and push themselves? How have they shown their level of commitment, passion, potential, knowledge of the industry and motivation? The majority of the time these questions will give you a good insight to what an individual will be like as an employee.

Engage them from day one?

First impressions continue into the first few weeks for an employee, particularly for members of the younger generation who make a decision about whether or not to stay with a company long-term during their first days on the job.

Reinforce that they made the right decision to work for you by getting them contributing in a meaningful way. Every position has its share of mundane tasks, especially at entry level, but think of an important project that they could be involved in even in a small way, and point out the importance of their part of it. It will make them feel valued and part of the bigger picture, while inspiring productivity and loyalty towards your company.

Hello!

I recently took a look at my computer's Internet history and was surprised to see a website called "Hot or Not" pop up numerous times at very late (early) times (1:00 am- 3:00 am). After clicking on the link I was directed to a profile page featuring my husband! It had several photo's of him and in the tag line it read "wants to meet women between the ages of 21 and 40 near _______ (where we live)" and in the interest sections it had "sex in the city" and "sex on the beach." After poking around the page a bit I learned that it had a chat where my husband had attempted to contact several women, only one had replied and only pleasantries had been exchanged. This was about a week ago. I did not say anything to him and did not change anything on the page. Today I checked the history again and found more of the same from last night, only now he has rated over 90 women in our area! Additionally, he has added Yahoo Messenger to our computer and his only contact (still pending) is a woman I don't know, who in her photo is obviously trying to be alluring.

I'm really at a loss as to what to do here. We have been married for less than two years and dated three years prior to getting married. I have never thought that he has cheated on me. However, when we first dated there was an issue with him having inappropriate conversations with girls on facebook. Basically, I feel as though this is a dangerous route that could lead to cheating and even if it did not, I am uncomfortable with the idea of him having online "relationships" with real women. Thoughts?
